One (scary) night in Melbourne
I had thought yesterday's blog would have been my last from Aussiland but no! As I hinted in the last post we went to Beetlejuice The Musical | Marriner Group at the wonderfully elaborate Regent Theatre, Melbourne - Wikipedia . The theatre was packed - all ages in attendance. Unlike West End theatres - Melbournians do not worry about what you wear - Australians are very relaxed about being "correctly attired".
The show was very loud, very energetic with entertaining set pieces. The principle "voice" was tiny with a massive larynx. There seems to be a tradition in musical theatre that big voices inhabit small bodies. I remember seeing diminutive Elaine Page in "Evita" in the late 70's and later on in "Cats".I thought the songs in last night's show were rather too similar and shouty, but that's what the Taylor Swift generation have grown up with...give me "Another suitcase in another hall" or "One Night in Bangkok".
Melbourne was buzzing last night, the streets full of people going to concerts - the city is awash with palaces of entertainment - or to restaurants and bars, enough to satisfy the most fastidious epicurean. We went to and from the theatre by tram - in itself a memorable experience - I met an English woman who had lived in Richmond with her husband until a year ago. She loved Melbourne.
Just about to close my suitcase before a final trip out and about and thence to the airport.
