Doggerland
It's 9 am Norwegian time; sun's not yet awoken. Not that we'd see it - dark cloud everywhere. Disappointed that it's 10 C degrees warmer here than in Bude where it's -3 C degrees.
Bergen is a lovely place, as we came into land you saw small, neat houses cluttered on the water's edge. The airport was echoing and spotless. Going to collect our luggage the down escalators appeared broken. "Just like home I thought." None of it they only started up as you approached. Very clever the Norwegians.
We'd just missed one coach to the pier and had to wait a while and then two arrived to carry a mixed bag of would be mariners to their boat. As we were boarding the coach I noticed a Boots carrier bag with empty sandwich cases in it. The only piece of litter in the whole area. The Vikings might have raped and pillaged. We simply are careless and thoughtless!
If you're not careful you can spend a life savings on MS Trollfjord. Hurtigruten have you captive and use every opportunity to rob you blind. If you haven't booked a Select deal each cup of coffee or tea costs about £3 and you're encouraged to pre-order your dinner drinks for the whole trip from a special selection of top wines. I ordered 6 btls for the 12 days - you can keep a btl over for the next meal.
I hadn't booked any excursions but discovered a horse riding one. Unfortunately it was fully booked so I'm on a snow mobile excursion. Did that in Svalbard this time of year in 2017 - scared the shit out of me!
The food is excessive - both in choice and amount - but excellent. Notably when we had the introductions to the crew last night after dinner the cook got a spontaneous round of applause. Most of us are over weight and clearly intend to stay that way.
Today we've passed Floro, Maloy and Torvik in the deep, deep darkness. We will send a few hours in Alesund a small town in an art nouveau style. Then onto Molde - known for its jazz festival and roses - not now.
