Farewell to new friends

Having done a wash and tumble dry this morning the 5th August had me heading back into Broome town and the Chinese district.

It is extremely hot and sunny here. It reminds me of a scene in "Chronicles of Riddick" where the searing sun vaporises the Purifier. That's how I felt walking into Broome. Old Broome hasn't much going for it - all the action is at Cable Beach. Think frontier Disney/Scunthorpe/Southend. It's incredibly bright, incredibly touristy and loud.

I met Rene and Brian, my new friends, at a bar there; except it wasn't a bar it was a theme park dressed up as a bar. Full of families and a cavalcade of camels with flashing lights traipsed by. It was quite weird.

We had a meal at a sea food restaurant -with a Japanese tilt - which shows what the profit motive can achieve given that Broome was bombed by the Japanese in 1942 and 1943. Broome makes much of the incidents.

The fish was lovely, I had Barramundi - which, I think, is their equivalent to cod. The serving staff were all young, from all over the place, Ireland, Spain and France. They loved working in Australia and especially in Broome. If you work in out of the way places such as Broome you can have a significantly extended work visa.

The taxi service (they don't have Uber) is great. I took a cab to Cable Beach and a cab back. My cab driver was Algerian. I'll have a cab to the airport tomorrow as I head south to Melbourne.
